A field guide to working knowledge

How much of the work
do you want to delegate?

A blank page. A thinking partner. An agent with a job to do. There’s a place for each.

DAWKA is built for documents you intend to keep useful. Here’s where it fits—and when another tool may fit better.

01 / The spectrum

More delegation.
Different responsibilities.

Read left to right as a change in how the work gets done. Farther right doesn’t mean better.

Pen & paperEntirely in your hands Pen & paper

You gather, connect, write, and revisit the information. A useful starting point when you want space to think.

ObsidianCore app Digital writing

The core app centers on local Markdown files and human-led knowledge work. Community plugins and external agents can extend this baseline.

Obsidian features

DAWKAA document with an ongoing purpose Digital writing through Ongoing maintenance

Tell a document what it is for and it proposes its own sections. An agent per section keeps it current from the pages and searches it watches, proposing changes for you to review or applying them within a budget you set. You can also edit it directly, or hand its link to an agent you bring.

NotionWith Custom Agents Digital writing through Full agents

Spans direct document editing and AI assistance through Custom Agents that run on schedules or events and act in permitted connected tools.

Custom Agents: schedules, permissions, and actions

CodaAI + automations Digital writing through Full agents

Combines human-led documents with AI content and configured automations. The right end represents connected Pack actions, not a claim that every automation is an autonomous agent.

ChatGPTIncluding Work AI assistance through Full agents

Ranges from conversational assistance to recurring delegated work with connected tools. Work can refresh existing artifacts, so its scope overlaps maintained documents.

ManusResearch followed by execution AI assistance through Full agents

General delegated workflows include parallel research, browser actions, and recurring updates to existing reports or dashboards. Actions depend on granted access and configuration.

An editorial map of workflows, not a quality score. Products overlap; permissions, plans, and integrations change their reach. Recurrence and autonomy are different: a scheduled workflow can still be tightly directed.

02 / The alternatives

Start with the work.

These are close alternatives for writing, research, and recurring document work. Their capabilities overlap.

DAWKA

Documents As Working Knowledge Agents

Keeping a particular brief, plan, or research document useful over time.

Evidence
Each document keeps its own sources and citations beside the sections they support.
Control & setup
The owner directs the agent and pays for its work; by default it proposes and you accept. Anyone with the link can edit, in atomic batches with conflict detection.
The tradeoff
Its agent looks after one document, not your other apps. Agent work costs credits, and the link is still the key to editing.

DAWKA capabilities checked against the current application. Read our current limits or explore a maintained-document template.

Notion

With Custom Agents

Team knowledge, databases, and workflows across a shared workspace.

Evidence
Agents use permitted pages, databases, and connected apps; activity logs help inspect their work.
Control & setup
Explicit resource permissions, agent configuration, activity logs, and version history.
The tradeoff
Choose it when the shared workspace and cross-tool workflows are central. DAWKA offers a narrower section-maintenance interface. Custom Agents require an eligible plan and configuration.

Coda

AI + automations

Operational documents combining tables, formulas, and integrations.

Evidence
AI works with document context. Review the references and behavior of the workflow you configure.
Control & setup
You configure automation rules and integrations; AI reviewer can leave feedback.
The tradeoff
Choose it when structured data and custom workflows are the work. Overlapping maintenance can be assembled, with setup and integration requirements.

Gemini Notebook

Formerly NotebookLM

Exploring source material and creating research or learning outputs.

Evidence
Source-grounded answers and research reports; you can review and import discovered sources.
Control & setup
You choose the source collection and the outputs to create.
The tradeoff
Choose it for rich source exploration. DAWKA focuses on how the sections of an ongoing document should change. Features and cloud-computer access vary by plan and rollout.

ChatGPT

Including Work

Flexible research, first drafts, and work spanning multiple formats and apps.

Evidence
Research and deliverables can use files and connected tools. Check the sources and permissions for the selected workflow.
Control & setup
Task instructions, connected-tool access, and review instructions shape delegation.
The tradeoff
Choose it for flexible exploration and broader execution. DAWKA concentrates settings around a document and its sections. Availability depends on plan, tools, and mode.

Claude

Including delegated work

Collaborative drafting, flexible research, and tasks across files and apps.

Evidence
Research searches iteratively and supplies citations.
Control & setup
Manual and Auto permissions, plus task instructions and connected-tool access.
The tradeoff
Choose it for broader writing and delegated work. Living documents and approval controls are shared capabilities; DAWKA emphasizes section maintenance. Claude Docs and the unified experience have plan and rollout qualifications.

03 / Our limits

A focused tool.
An unfinished story.

Choose DAWKA when the ongoing document is the work. Choose a broader agent when the job needs actions across apps.

  • Each document’s agent maintains that document. It does not send email, post, or act in your other apps.
  • The owner supplies an OpenRouter key and OpenRouter bills it directly. DAWKA sells no credits and adds no model, operation, or search fees. Soft monthly and per-run USD budgets limit admitted work; actual provider spend can exceed an estimate.
  • A section’s agent reaches outside only through the pages, searches, and tools you approve for it. Source previews stay private; local files are previewed in the browser and only saved text is uploaded.
  • Accounts own documents and only the owner can run the built-in agent or review its proposals. Anyone holding a document’s link can still read and edit it, so treat the link like a password.
  • The account dashboard collects documents that need review or attention, including missing keys and budget limits.
  • Without an account, creating a document needs an email address. The link is sent there and never shown on screen.
  • Outbound actions and threshold alerts are future work.
